At MLSS students have the rare opportunity to face real life problems, create solutions, share their ideas with other children and adults alike, and see what happens when their decisions are applied everyday. Students learn to be responsible community members by having equal voices in making complicated choices. Learning how to be responsible is a process and making mistakes is an important part of the process. Dealing with the results of an action helps students learn to look at and evaluate possible future outcomes. Freedom to make decisions gives students the opportunity to understand the meaning of responsibility.
Everything from choosing what, when, and where we eat lunch to participating in a meeting which decides how we budget school money is decided by individual school members. The freedom to make these decisions applies to the biggest and the smallest of our members.
Developing personal responsibility is a lifelong process. Learning to create and maintain relationships with other people is an important part of the process. MLSS students have the opportunity to make decisions about living with each other on a daily basis. When a student writes a complaint on her friend for breaking a rule, s/he wrestles with issues of loyalty to a friend versus what is best for the school. This is an opportunity to develop personal responsibility for the student, the friend, and other school members. Situations involving personal responsibility frequently arise as we make decisions about our lives together.
Personal responsibility incorporates pursuing individual interests. Individuals develop confidence by creating and implementing their ideas. As plans are realized, students learn the skills and self-discipline required to carry out their goals.
